Chakras… the Basics

For those of you who are unaware, it is a belief in Hinduism that the chakras are wheels of energy that cycle the human body.  And to have a fulfilling life, each chakra must work succinctly.  The world of chakras can seem a little overwhelming sometimes, and while the chakra system is certainly related to the physical body, it’s also a way of balancing spiritually.  So in my upcoming workshop, we will be using specific Yoga techniques and meditation to balance each of the chakras.  Here is a brief insight into what each chakra represents.

FIRST WHAT IS A CHAKRA?

The chakras are large energy centres within the body.  Each chakra is connected to an area of the body and has its own characteristics and job role.  Yet they all work together beautifully.  You can connect with these different energy centres, learning different things about yourself, seeing where there are areas in your life that can benefit from being more supported and what areas you might connect more naturally with.  They are like your natural strengths and challenges. Let’s take a quick look at what each one represents.

THE ROOT CHAKRA

Found at the base of the spine, this chakra is your connection to your physical body.  It’s colour is red.  This chakra is related to safety and physical security like food, money, water and shelter.  It’s about feeling grounded and secure.  When out of balance, you can be plagued by fear and anxieties, issues with eating, a lack of focus on finances, responsibility and grounding.

THE SACRAL CHAKRA

Orange in colour and located just below your belly button, the second chakra is related to pleasure, fun and a sense of vitality.  When balanced,  you are connected to your desires and creativity and comfortable expressing them, and out of balance, you might suffer from emotional baggage, limiting beliefs and addictions.

THE SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

It’s located at your navel centre and it’s yellow.  It’s related to identity, ego, willpower and knowing your own self.  This chakra is about your perception of who you are.  It’s action is power and it’s qualities are confidence, reliability, responsibility, being in touch with who you are and having confidence in that.  If out of balance, you might be experiencing self-judgement and criticism.

THE HEART CHAKRA

As its name suggests, this chakra is located at the heart space and relates to love, compassion and acceptance.  It’s related to feelings of warmth and joy.  It’s green in colour and is the connection between the first three more earthly chakras and the top three more spiritual centres in the body.  When out of balance, you may experience a lot of neediness, a lot of lack, and a sense of codependency and mistrust.

THE THROAT CHAKRA

It’s blue in colour and located over the throat.  It’s related to self-expression and truthfulness in both thought and speech.  It’s also related to accepting who you are and what you believe in.  if out of balance, you might suffer from a critical inner monologue.

THE THIRD EYE CHAKRA

It’s found at the centre of the forehead and is coloured indigo.  It’s related to wisdom and intuition.  If balanced, it supports a strong gut feeling and understanding about the world around you.  When out of balance, you lack connection to the spiritual world, you lack clarity and feel stuck in the daily grind.

THE CROWN CHAKRA

It has a violet colour and is located at the crown of the head.  This is a chakra for understanding that everything is connected.  If out of balance, you may suffer from a lack of connection to joy, peace and serenity.

BALANCING THE CHAKRAS

Hopefully you understand the chakras a bit better now.  To balance the chakras we use meditation and sound, all the way to movement and breathwork.  Join us for our workshop that will balance these chakras through movement, meditation and the power of kriya.
