Improve your Health with Yin Yoga

Here at One for All, we provide many health benefits to your body.  Fundamentally we offer the well-known Vinyasa style of Yoga, and we do it in the heat to allow the option to go a little bit deeper, and then we also offer a slower-paced Yin Yoga to complement that more yang way of practising.  Rather than strengthening and stretching the muscles, Yin Yoga targets the connective tissue and joints.  Among the many benefits it provides are improved joint elasticity, increased flexibility and stress reduction.

In Yin Yoga, both yin and yang are considered equal.  It’s the combination of yin and yang that is necessary to find balance and stay in optimal health.

WHAT IS YIN YOGA?

Yin Yoga is mainly about finding stillness and cooling the mind.   The emphasis in Yin Yoga is not on strength or power but on the quality of a person’s experience.  It uses the principle of surrendering to find a place of acceptance and stillness.  This provides great assistance for you to overcome negative energies and to be more gentle, patient and non-reactive.

We release physical tension from the body as well as calming the mind.  This is achieved by gently stretching the ligaments and fascia of the body, promoting flexibility and improving density of bone structure.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM A CLASS?

In a Yin Yoga class you will be invited to stay in each pose for up to five minutes in absolute stillness.  This idea is pretty petrifying for many people!

Your teacher will guide you through a range of different options and shapes, using different combinations of props.  These different shape options target the same areas of the body so you can choose which works for you depending on where your tight spots are and how far you need to go in order to feel the stretch.

You don’t need any experience to attend these classes as most of the poses are isolating one area or muscle group and they are done in a very supported way.  You’ll be guided how to get in and out of each pose clearly.  Plus your teacher will be able to modify the poses for you and give you additional props if you need them.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Most of us understand that Yoga consists of both a physical and spiritual workout.  Yin Yoga focuses on self-awareness and respect for one’s own self.  This practice incorporates a meditative mindset to foster inner calmness and awareness.

Practising Yin regularly helps in releasing stiffness and improves overall circulation.  This leads to better range of motion in your joints and muscles.  Whether you find yourself wanting more space in your body, or you’re looking to slow your mind down, regular practise of Yin Yoga will help lessen stress in your body and give you a balanced state of mind.  The longer-held postures are often compared to the time spent in practising meditation as the mind shifts from active to passive.  A longer Savasana prolongs the feeling of bliss that you usually get after practising Yoga.
