Restorative Yoga: the Benefits

We love Restorative Yoga.  And if you like a practice that is all about slowing down then you will too.  When you come to our weekly Restorative Yoga class, you will hardly move at all, just doing a few postures over the course of an hour.  All you have to do is come down, snuggle into your mat, and be open to an experience that is completely different to most other styles of Yoga.  There are so many benefits to slowing down and embracing the power of rest.  Here are just a handful.

Relaxes your mind and body

All Yoga can reduce stress and anxiety.  We know that it can lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.  But when you practise Restorative Yoga, a deeper level of relaxation is seen not only right away and that night but for days afterwards too.

Soothes the nervous system

Again, most styles of Yoga can help to encourage deeper breathing and trigger the parasympathetic nervous system.  But on top of this, the overall calming effect on the nervous system set by the deeply relaxing nature of Restorative Yoga comforts your mind and body down to the cellular level.

Increases sleep quality

On top of general relaxation, Restorative Yoga is shown to increase the quality of sleep.  And when it comes to focus and memory, sleep length and quality is incredibly important.

Builds body and mind connection

When you meditate it can be challenging to quiet the mind, especially when you’re starting out.  Holding Restorative Yoga poses is a simple way to allow your body and mind to reach a calmer, more present place.
