Fascia is a system of connective tissue that encases all the different parts of the body and binds them all together. It is primarily made of collagen. It surrounds muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments and gives them their shape. We use myofascial release techniques to release restrictions in the fascia by using gentle pressure motions and compressions to soften fuzzed up fascia, allowing it to release back into its natural wavy pattern.
THE TISSUE THAT HOLDS YOU TOGETHER
Since it surrounds and attaches to all structures, fascia plays an important role in the support and function of the body. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. Trauma, such as a fall, surgery, a car accident, whiplash or just habitual poor posture and repetitive stress injuries have cumulative effects on the body. The changes in the fascial system caused by trauma influences the function and comfort of the body. When you use myofascial release techniques you can help promote increased flexibility, proper body mechanics and movement, postural and movement awareness and enhancement of strength.
FASCIAL PAIN
Determining whether pain is due to muscles, joints or fascia can be difficult. But in general, muscle injuries and joint problems feel worse the more you move, whereas fascial adhesions tend to feel better with movement and also respond well to heat, both of which help to increase the tissue’s elasticity.
FASCIAL RESTRICTION
There are various reasons why fascia can become restricted, such as incorrect posture, lack of movement or too much repetitive movement, physical and emotional traumas, or as mentioned before, surgery. When fascia is restricted it basically means it has become dehydrated, dry and tight, leading it to become a sticky, matted mess of shortened fibres all knotted up together. Restricted fascia can cause mind, body and soul discomfort, physical aches and pains and an overall lack of balance. Restoring the fascia back to its truest and happiest form can create a huge positive shift both physically and mentally.
THE GREAT CONNECTOR AND ORGANISER OF THE BODY
The fascial system provides the balance of flexibility and stability that creates a resilient and adaptive body. So if you want to maintain the performance and adaptability of your body, it makes sense to take care of the fascial system. Our fluid vinyasa practice helps the fascial system by stretching the lines of fascia, taking the body in all directions. Our Yin practice helps to regain mobility and ease pain in the body by applying a gentle, healthy stress to the joints and a gentle stretch to the connective tissues. Then our myofascial release workshops help to restore the natural elasticity to tight and hardened fascia.
