Yoga is an ancient practice, which through the centuries has morphed into what is now considered to be a form of physical exercise.  In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (c. 9th century), Yoga is defined as ‘the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind’. There is now evidence to suggest that the physical practice of Yoga improves flexibility, increases lung capacity, lowers blood pressure, activates the parasympathetic nervous system and alleviates chronic pain.

Through ‘Yoga’ you can lower your cortisol levels to promote relaxation and reduce stress.  The mindfulness aspects of ‘uniting body, breath and mind’ can improve your concentration and focus by enhancing mental clarity.

The physical practise of Yoga can help with weight control as well as reducing back and joint pain.  The focus on breathing and relaxation can help to lower anxiety and depression as well as increase mental clarity.

Therefore Yoga can be both a physical exercise and a mindfulness practice.  The ultimate aim of physical Yoga is for the body to undergo a process of absolute purification in order to remove impurities so that the subtle body’s energy channels function and energy blocks are released.  This is considered essential in order to use the balanced physical body as a preparatory pre-requisite to achieve higher states of consciousness.
